Our development team and partners at Gibson Thornley Architects visited Cleveland Steel & Tubes Ltd, who are supplying reclaimed steel for our 16 Berners Street project – a low-carbon office retrofit office development in Fitzrovia.

Using surplus steel from the oil and gas sector helps reduce the embodied carbon of the building’s frame by over 50%. Circular steel sections used in the project have just 4.5% of the embodied carbon of new steel.

Philip McLaughlin, Kajima Properties, said: “The visit to Cleveland Steel & Tubes offered a valuable opportunity to see firsthand how surplus steel from the oil and gas industry is carefully sourced, refurbished and repurposed for use in industrial and construction projects. This collaboration is a strong reflection of our commitment to circular economy principles, and we’re excited to see 16 Berners Street evolve into a best-in-class, sustainable office space.”

Roy Fishwick, Cleveland Steel, added: “It was great to show the team around our North Yorkshire site. The oil and gas industry generates a significant amount of surplus steel, which we repurpose for use in new projects. Since 1973, we’ve grown to hold 84,000 tonnes of Certified and Uncertified stock, making us one of Europe’s largest steel tube stockholders. We have now also established a stock of 5,000 tonnes of reused H and I steel beams. Through our global network, customers access over 250,000 tonnes of material, supplied quickly, reliably, and sustainably.”

Ben Gibson, Gibson Thornley Architects, commented: “Thinking smartly about reducing carbon consumption and engaging with the circular economy involves a collaborative approach. Visiting Cleveland Steel with our client, Kajima, and working closely with our construction partners, Curo Construction, has enabled us to properly understand the complexity of repurposing and reclaiming steel from the petrochemical and gas industry. The steelwork is being repurposed to form the primary steelwork that repairs and extends the retained existing frame, creating vital and enriched prime office space in Fitzrovia.”
